It’s autumn in Happy Valley, let’s go off the beaten track and enjoy the beautiful colors and scenery.
Take a fall picnic; a thermos of hot soup, coffee or hot chocolate, some easy snacks and finger desserts, toss in some stadium blankets, charcoal to make a fire in the fire pits or grills on site and get out in the crisp fall air.
Picnic tip: You can steam hotdogs at home, then pack them lengthwise into a wide mouth thermos, then add a bit of the steaming liquid to keep them moist. Restaurant type packets of stadium mustard, ketchup and relish work well, but remember to bring back your own trash. Don’t forget the buns.
If you hike Mount Nittany, remember it is a BIG Mountain, with parking areas that all look the same all around the base. There are a series of wonderful hikes that might just put you out at a very different parking area miles away from your car, and you wouldn’t be the first person with this problem.
Try to do a loop hike like the “Stadium view” and be sure you are physically up to a serious hike- not a walk in the park, and weather is not threatening to snow, or add a thunderstorm to the challenge.
For those less adventuresome, take a walk around the Penn State Arboretum, located across from the Smeal Business building, and see what is happening in Fall. Be sure to check the gardens an tiny orchard in the “Childhood’s Gate” children’s area or the espaliered apple trees and grapes elsewhere along the walks.
A walk up the Mall from the Corner Room to Pattee and then across campus to the Creamery is also fabulous in Fall. Bring peanuts in the shell for the squirrels. Stop by Hintz Alumni Center to see the gardens and the pond in fall glory.
