This issue, Off The Beaten Track helps you get set up for your Beaver Stadium tailgate.
Early Friday morning, those in the know get up while it’s still dark and ramble out of their RV’s, headed for the Penn State Meats Lab to buy tailgate grilling meats. The line stretches a long way so get there early – don’t say we didn’t warn you.
The doors open every Friday during the Spring and Fall semesters at 9:30 am and stay open until everything is sold, or 3:30 pm, which ever comes first.
The Meat Lab is where they sell wonderful cuts of bacon, steaks, cheesesteak meat, – you name it, they’ve got it – to those in the know. These are university raised livestock, and the lab teaches students how to butcher, smoke and prepare the meats. Kosher instruction is also provided.
Bring cash and no, they don’t ship.
Look for the small white building opposite the East side of the stadium on Porter Road. There is a tiny parking lot beside it that is filled swiftly, especially on game day weekends. Open Friday mornings during the school term (Fall- Spring) except holidays, and when it is all gone, they are closed- so go early.
Location: Porter Road, between the Visitor’s Center and baseball stadium
Next it’s on to the Creamery for all your cheeses, sandwiches, and dips. Did you know they even sell Diner Stickies now? So it is truly one-stop shopping.
Park around the corner in the East Deck Parking Garage located directly behind the Creamery Store and the Food Science Building. The first 30 minutes are free.
